Manual Handling: Making sure you stay safe

Did you know that poor manual handling is a leading cause of workplace injuries in the UK? It is vital to always stress the importance of best practices for manual handling. Proper technique can prevent serious injuries and improve productivity.

Here are a few essential tips:

1. Assess the Load: Before lifting, it’s crucial to evaluate the weight and size of the load. If it’s too heavy or awkward, use mechanical aids or ask for help.

2. Proper Posture: Bend your knees, not your back! Keep your back straight, feet shoulder-width apart, and lift with the legs.

3. Keep Close: Hold the load as close to your body as possible to reduce strain on your spine.

4. Avoid Twisting: If you need to turn, move your feet rather than twisting your torso.

5. Plan Your Route: Make sure the path is clear of obstructions and hazards before you begin moving the load.

In 2024, nearly 30% of workplace injuries in the UK were related to manual handling (HSE). Adopting these best practices can significantly reduce that number. Implementing these tips not only ensures safety but also enhances efficiency and morale within the workplace. Let’s make every lift a safe lift!

Looking after yourself when working outside: Our top tips

Working as a labourer means facing the elements daily. Whether it’s the extreme summer heat or the chilly winter winds, looking after your wellbeing is crucial for maintaining your health and productivity. Outdoor labouring can sometimes be underestimated in terms of the toll it takes on our bodies. Read our top tips here:

1. Stay Hydrated: Dehydration can sneak up on you, especially in the UK summer. Aim to drink at least 2 litres of water throughout the day to keep your body functioning optimally. Carry a reusable water bottle with you and take sips regularly, rather than waiting until you’re thirsty, as thirst can be a sign you’ve already started to dehydrate.

2. Dress Appropriately: Layering is key to managing body temperature effectively. Use moisture-wicking materials to keep sweat off your skin in summer, which helps prevent rashes and discomfort. In the winter, thermal layers are essential to retain heat and protect against cold-related injuries like hypothermia. Don’t forget gloves and a hat to protect your extremities.

3. Use Sun Protection: Even when it’s cloudy, UV rays can cause damage. Apply a high-SPF sunscreen generously to all exposed skin, and reapply throughout the day, especially if you’re sweating. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat and UV-protection sunglasses can protect your face and eyes from harmful rays.

4. Take Breaks: Regular short breaks are crucial to prevent burnout and reduce the risk of injury. Make use of shaded areas or indoor spaces to rest and cool down or warm up, depending on the season. Scheduled breaks can enhance your overall productivity and ensure you maintain your energy levels throughout the day.

5. Healthy Snacking: Instead of sugary snacks that give a quick energy spike followed by a crash, opt for protein-rich foods and fruits. These snacks provide long-lasting energy and essential nutrients that help you stay strong and focused. Consider options like nuts, yogurt, and fresh fruit to keep your energy up without the crash.
