The most common accidents when working in construction – And how to avoid them!

Working in construction can be incredibly rewarding, but it’s also a high-risk industry that demands our utmost attention to safety. According to HSE reports, over 79,000 construction workers sustain injuries each year in the UK. Let’s delve deeper into the most common accidents on construction sites and discuss effective strategies to prevent them.

1. Falls from Height: Falls from height are the most frequent accidents in construction. To mitigate this risk, it’s imperative to always use proper scaffolding, harnesses, and safety nets. Ensure that ladders are stable and secure before use, and never underestimate the importance of conducting regular inspections of fall protection gear.

2. Struck by Objects: Being struck by falling or flying objects is another common hazard. While wearing a hard hat is crucial, there’s more we can do to prevent injuries. Secure all tools and materials, particularly when working above ground, and implement netting or toe boards on scaffolding to catch debris before it falls.

3. Caught-in/between Equipment: This type of accident often results from inadequate awareness. Stay alert and maintain clear, effective communication with your team members. Always shut off machinery when performing maintenance and use lockout/tagout procedures to ensure no one accidentally restarts equipment while it’s being serviced.

Staying safe on construction sites is paramount and requires a concerted effort from everyone involved. For more information about our latest vacancies, or to find out how South57 Construction can support your business, contact us on 07894 321999 or office@south57cr.com.
